Classification of transducers based on the type of energy conversion, sensing principle, and output signal.

Classification of transducer ? Characteristics, Working

Hello guys, we can classify transducers based on several criteria such as the type of energy conversion they use, the direction of energy conversion, and the nature and type of input/output signal required for the application.Basically, the right choice of the transducer is based on the application requirement. The various type of classification of transducer

Classification of Transducer

Here are some basic classifications of transducers are mentioned below:-

Based on the type of energy conversion:

Transducers can be classified based on the type of energy conversion they use. The most common part of energy conversion is:-

  • Electrical transducer:- It is used to convert non-electrical energy into electrical energy (e.g. Microphones, photoelectric sensors, etc. (Microphone converts sound energy into electrical energy).
  • Mechanical transducer:- It converts mechanical energy into electrical energy (e.g. accelerometer converts mechanical vibration into electrical energy.)
  • Thermal transducer:- It is used to convert thermal energy into electrical energy (e.g. thermocouple transducer converts temperature into electrical energy.
  • Optical transducer:- This type of transducer is convert light energy into electrical energy (e.g. photodiode converts light energy into electrical energy.)
  • Chemical Transducer:- convert chemical energy into electrical energy (e.g. a PH sensor converts the PH level in electrical signals.)

Based on the direction of the energy conversion

Transducer can be also classified based on the direction of the energy conversion. The two main types of transducers are based on the direction of the energy:-

  • Input transducer:- This type of transducer converts physical quantities into electrical signals. for example, the microphone converts the sound signal into electrical energy.
  • Output transducer:- This type of transducer converts an electrical signal into a physical. for example, the sound speaker converts electrical energy into sound energy

Based on the nature of the input/output of the transducer:-

Transducers can be classified based on the nature of the input/output of the transducer. The two main types of the nature of input/output of the transducer signal are:-

  • Active transducer:- In this type of transducer convert the energy from one form to another form without any external power source. for example, a photovoltaic cell converts light energy into electrical energy without requiring an external power source.
  • Passive transducers:- It is convert energy from one form to another, for instance, a thermistor converts temperature changes into an electrical signal, which requires a power supply to operate.

Based on the physical phenomenon:-

Transducers can be classified based on the physical phenomenon they measure of the defect. Some common types of transducers based on the physical phenomenon:-

  • Pressure transducer:- Measure change in pressure.
  • Temperature transducer:- Measure the change in temperature.
  • Flow transducer:- Measure the flow fluid flow rate.
  • Force transducer:- Measure the change in force or weight.
  • Position transducer: Measure in change or measure.

Types of the transducer:-

We will discuss the transducer in more detail and the classification of transducer.

  1. Pressure transducers:- It is measure changes in pressure and are mostly based on various principles of energy conversion, such as piezoelectric, capacitance, or strain gauge. People use pressure transducers in automobile devices, medical equipment, and hydraulic systems.
  2. Temperature transducers:- It is measure changes in temperature and is mostly based on various principles of energy conversion, such as thermocouples, RTD, and thermistors. People use temperature transducers in food processing and industrial processes.
  3. Flow transducers:- measure changes in the flow rate of fluids and can be used to measure HVAC, water treatment, and chemical processing.
  4. Accelerometers:- It is measure changes in speed or vibration and are based on various principles such as piezoelectric and capacitance. People use accelerometer transducers in automotive systems, aerospace systems, and medical devices.
  5. The magnetic transducer:- It measures the magnetic field or converts magnetic energy into an electrical field based on magnetostriction or magnetic induction. People mostly use it in medical equipment, environmental devices, and industrial electrical equipment.
