An electrical isolation switch used for breaking an electrical circuit and providing safety by preventing electrical shock and electrocution

Isolator Switch: The Ultimate Circuit Switches

Hello guys, today we are discussing the role of isolator switches in electrical, the types of isolator switches, the Working isolator switches, the function of the isolator switches, the advantages and disadvantages of the isolator switches, etc

The Isolator is basically for safety purposes in the electrical. It is the main role played in the protection of the electrical equipment by isolating the devices from the electrical main power supply. It is mostly time connected in the incoming power supply.

Isolator Switch:-

It operates in two conditions NC (Normally closed) or NO (Normally Open). The isolator switch connects to the incoming power supply in series. Use it to cut off power during maintenance or to operate manually.

The isolator switches provide safety during maintenance purposes by breaking the supply disconnected from the main source of the power supply.

Before choosing an isolator these things to keep in mind:-

Specification of the isolator switches:-

  • Voltage
  • Frequency
  • Current
  • No. of Poles
  • Normally rated voltage
  • Highest rated voltage

Construction of the isolator Switch:-

The isolator switches are very simple in construction is mainly operate in manual mode because in has no safety feature like OLR, MCB, etc. One lever is used to change the state of the isolator switches to change the condition of the switches. NC to NO and NO to NC mode.

Working of the isolator switches:-

When changing the condition of the handle/lever of the isolator switches. The terminal of the switch disconnects the device from the incoming power supply from the source. The incoming side terminal of the isolator switch easily disconnects by only changing the state of the handle. then we can easily perform the maintenance work.

The most used isolator switches in the substation during the distribution of electrical power combine work with the circuit breaker with protective equipment.

Types of the isolator switches:-

  • HV Isolator Switches(HT).
  • LV Isolator Switches.

Advantages of the isolator switches:-

  • Better safety provides during maintenance purposes
  • Highly reliable for prevention of the electrical shock.
  • low cost with compact in size.
  • Very easy to operate.

The disadvantage of the Isolator Switches:-

  • Required need to be totally reliant on the switches.
  • Increase the cost of the system.
  • In HT isolator switches required maintenance over a specific time period.
  • I have no safety sensing devices like OLR, MCB, etc.
