What is rotary switch? Know everything About it

Hello guys, today we are discussing the use of the rotary switch, the type of switch, the working of the rotary switch, the construction of the rotary switch, advantages and disadvantages of rotary switch.

These switches are basically for the cylindrical types case to make the connection electrical connection or break the electrical connection. The case with a knob or lever to hold the proper grip for the selection of the connection.

What role of a rotary switch? You should know about this.

The rotary switch is a basic electrical device for connecting the electrical connection and breaking the electrical connection. this mostly required changing the position of the switch physically (by hand) through the hold of the knob or lever above the selector switch.

The physical pressure required to move the switch and connect one terminal to the other terminal but inversely break one terminal or connect to another electrical circuit in the connection.

The rotary switch, also referred to as a selector switch, finds extensive use in wiring and electrical circuits in the industrial sector. Typically, it is placed above the electrical panel, allowing easy access and effortless position change for anyone.

Construction of the rotary switch.

The selector switch outer case is constructed of plastic to prevent electrical shock. Additionally, the rotary switch is cylindrical in shape, which reduces friction and allows anyone to change its position easily by holding the knob or lever and applying slight pressure. Furthermore, the selector switch terminals consist of copper and gold plates, and the rotary switches have a cylindrical architecture for their internal parts.

Types of the rotary switch/Selector switch:-

  1. Single pole selector switch.
  2. Double pole selector switch.

Types of the rotary switch/selector switch:-

  1. single pole with a single set of contacts.
  2. Double pole with a double set of contacts.
  3. Multipole with a multiset of contacts.

Selector Switch

Working of the Selector Switches:-

Most of the selector switch works only in manual mode. the convenient way to make the electrical signal and break electrical wiring without changing any in the hard wiring within a less time period an effective way. the best method to reduce the time to change the wiring in between the terminal effectively way in a short time period by just manually. it also works in alternating current input supply and direct current input-output power supply. The function is comparatively similar to the 3-point starter.

Advantages of the selector switch:-

  • Versatility:- The wide range supported available for the application of the electrical regarding the electrical connection needed.
  • Durability:-The life cycle of the selector switch is comparable to other types of switches used in electrical applications. The life of the switch depends on its usage.
  • Ease of use:- the selector switch is very easy to operate to shift the moment in between the contact terminal with very minimal effort. it is a type of very convenient and user-friendly type of switch.
  • High contact reliability:- this is a very highly reliable switch to make and break the electrical connection. because the high reliability in the electrical circuit plays a very crucial role.
  • Cost Effective:- The cost of the switch is very low compared to the other types of electrical switches, such as programmable logic controllers or relays.
  • Multipole:- The major advantage of the selector switch is multiple poles help in giving control the switching of the multiple pole control switching simultaneously with just a single effort.

Disadvantages of the selector switch:-

  • Complex wiring:-Wiring multiple switches can be a complex and time-consuming process, which may not always be cost-effective due to the significant effort required.
  • Accidental switching:- Sometimes accidentally switched to another unintended position. that can hamper the electrical circuit and application also.
  • Contact wear and degradation:- The continuous switching over the time of the selector switch. in their very high chance to wear and tear of the contact of the terminal of electrical circuits.
  • Limited current handling:- The major disadvantage of the selector switch is can not handle a large amount of current for a long time period. they can fail or burn out the terminal of the selector switch.
