What is Switchgear?

Today we have to discuss Switchgear with a full wide explanation of types of switch-gear, the Working of switchgear, Application, prons and cons, usage, etc

What is switchgear? You Should know about it.

“People use switchgear in electrical power systems to connect and disconnect the electrical circuit and protect it from unwanted threats such as excessive current, short circuits, and overloads.”

The switchgear has a major advantage in isolating and breaking the circuit in a faulty condition. In any unwanted surge in electrical power, the switchgear automatically senses and isolates (disconnects) the from the power supply and provides protection from the fault. Automatically disconnect, de-energizing the power.

Types of  Switch-gears:-

  1. Low Voltage Switch-gear.
  2. Medium Voltage Switch-gear.
  3. High Voltage Switch-gear.

Low Voltage Switch-gears:-

The Low voltage is better compatible with the voltage under the 1KV  power supply. The power distribution by the transformer across a variety of small-scale industries. The Low Voltage Switchgear is MCCB, HRC fuse, ELCB (Earth leakage circuit breaker), Switch, and Low voltage circuit breakers.

Medium voltage switch-gear:-

People commonly use medium-type switchgear for a maximum voltage power of up to 75KV in electrical power systems. They mostly use it in the feeder, generator, transmission, and distribution applications. People primarily use different types of medium voltage switch gears in transmission and distribution, including the minimum oil circuit breaker, bulk oil circuit breaker, SF6 circuit breaker, air-insulated, and Vaccum Circuit breaker. They use these types of switchgear to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment

High Voltage Switch-gear:-

The high voltage switchgear is used only more than 75KV power in the system. Because this switchgear is for high power so it has improved safety features related to the other switchgear in the power system. The High Voltage is highly generated by the arc during the operation in has required intensive safety features and is also reliable in the operation. It very rarely operates when the circuit sense some abnormality.

“I am listing some switch-gear examples below:”

  • Fuse
  • Isolator
  • Switch
  • Relay
  • Lightning arresters
  • Circuit Protector
Working of Switch-gear:-

Most of the switch-gears have the sensing element for providing short-circuit safety, overload, etc. When a short circuit excessively high amount of current flows in the circuit. During a short circuit, the high current can damage the electrical equipment so using the switch-gear provide safety from the electrical threat.

Features of Switchgear:-
  • Fast operating Speed.
  • Main control provision.
  • Highly reliable.
  • High Sensitivity.
  • Widely used in industrial automation for more information click here
Functions of Switchgears:-
  • As per requirement, it is also utilized as a normal close (NC) and Normally open (NO).

  • switchgears isolate the system from the power supply when sensing any such type of abnormality.
  • It is also protected from short circuits and faulty currents.
  • It helps in power distribution and also ensures safety in the system.
  • Mechanically operate and disconnected the system from the source power supply

Pros:-

  • Reliable
  • Fast operation
  • Compact.
Cons:-
  • Extra space is required.
  • Cost Increase of the system.
  • Increase the complexity
